Department of Mining Engineering has been offering subjects on environmental engineering and safety engineering, both at UG and PG, level for many years. The department introduced a dual degree program entitled Mine Safety Engineering from the academic year of 2005-06 to address the challenges of safety management issues. The purpose of the program was to prepare the students with in-depth knowledge and hands-on-training on various aspects of the present and the emerging field of safety engineering in mines. As a part of it, three new laboratories namely, Safety Engineering and Human Factors, Rescue and Disaster Management and Automation and Virtual Reality were established, in addition to the existing Mine Fire and Explosion Laboratory. A few years later Rescue and Disaster Management was added to it to develop engineers trained in industrial and natural disaster management. A new course on Rescue and Disaster Management was introduced and new Rescue and Disaster Management Laboratory was established. The course has been built upon this background. In addition, the scope of the course has been extended to other relevant industrial sectors where safety, health and the environment are of more concern and as a result student from other disciplines can join this course

The course will be offered by the Department of Mining Engineering, in association with the relevant departments, namely Civil, Chemical, Electrical, Industrial and Systems, Mechanical, and Petroleum Engineering.
