Surface Mining Course apprises the students of the basics of surface mining i.e. concepts, preliminary evaluation of the prospects, operations and identification of the deposits amenable to surface mining. The course offers the students the basic knowledge required for opening up a deposit by surface mining methods, learning operating procedures, and developing of surface mines including their layouts. Students will be exposed to the total life cycle of surface mining from the evaluation of surface mining prospects to mine closure. Various unit operations of surface mining by cyclic or continuous methods or by both will be explained in this course.

The course will introduce the students to the basics of mine planning and design principles of surface mining operations including deposit evaluation, ultimate pit limit determination, and production scheduling. Additionally, this course will also help the students to undertake activities related to selection of technology and equipment, and the estimation of fleet size based on deployment and production schedule.  This course will enable the students to draw mine layouts and design systems for the selected technology, coal, and non-coal blast design and planning and contriving of overburden/ waste dumps.
