Indian Coal Mining is old and has complex legacy due to changes in ownership, governance and policy. Currently a huge land and reserves are yet to be monetized. Quality of life within and around mining industry has huge scopes of improvement. Sustainable development in mining industry are facing numerous challenges. In this back drop many a times investments in capital, operation and maintenance are not performing as expected. Thus there are needs of investigating how the assets in the industry are managed. As mining industry is characteristically different from other industries, there is need of adopting philosophies and practices in other industries after appropriate due diligence. Asset management practices are now adopted in various industries including mining industry in developed countries. To adopt some of the principles to the benefit of our industries, it is necessary that we improve our knowledge base and start assessing ourselves. Before hiring any service providers for our utility management, for our business operations through a specific methodology, it is necessary to  update our understanding and knowledge.
